Environmental education and awareness programmes
The AMPPA project carries out raising awareness and environmental education activities for operators and users across all three Marine Protected Areas, helping communities understand the value of marine biodiversity and sustainable fishing practices. The project also implements Management Effectiveness Evaluation methods to assess the performance of marine protected area management, providing data-driven insights to improve conservation outcomes.
Throughout the project period, 30 information and awareness-raising animation days were organised across Italy and Malta, bringing together citizens, students, fishermen, and local stakeholders to share knowledge about marine ecosystems.
Three laboratories and educational paths were established, providing hands-on learning experiences about marine biology, fishing traditions, and environmental stewardship for students and local communities.
A dedicated communication campaign was launched on social networks to reach wider audiences and promote awareness of the Mediterranean marine environment and the AMPPA project results.
Three Environmental Education Centres were set up or strengthened across the project area, along with one cross-border environmental information centre to facilitate knowledge sharing between Italy and Malta.
Three experimental fishing campaigns were conducted to study artisan fishing practices and their interaction with marine protected areas, supporting sustainable fishing activity and the livelihoods of local fishermen.
Three training courses were delivered for fishing activity diversification, helping fishermen develop new skills and sustainable income sources compatible with marine conservation goals.
